If you’re someone who lives in a home, chances are you’re sharing space with other uninvited guests who aren’t human, called pests. Finding an insect in your home can be unnerving and even overwhelming. The best way to prevent yourself from being surprised by a pest infestation is to handle the problem as soon as it begins. Insects are creatures lurking in various places of your home. They are  hexapod invertebrates which have their body divided into 3 parts. The 3 part division includes the head, thorax and abdomen, with  compound eyes, a pair of antennae, and three pairs of jointed legs. Insects are commonly found in any and all environments from underwater to the land. Be it kitchen, pantry, toilets, or garage, pest invasion is a major issue for the health and causes immense damage to household property.

We have outlined some of the most common types of insects found in and around your homes for easier identification.

1. Ants

Ants are tiny but relentless home invaders. Ants may enter your home using gaps around doors, holes in window screens, cracks in a building’s foundation, and openings around plumbing or electrical outlets. They have huge organized colonies forming territories which include workers, soldiers, and other specialized groups. They prefer cold and wet weather, and also weather which is hot and dry. They will burrow into woods to make nests.

2. Cockroaches

Cockroaches are filthy pests that can easily infest and take over your homes if proper precautions are not taken. The world often depicts them as dirty pests because they contaminate food, destroy paper and fabric, triggering asthma and allergies, and bring bacteria wherever they go.  These pests prefer warm, humid places with available food and water sources, so eliminating these attractive environments can help prevent cockroach infestations.

3. Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be found in homes surrounded by stagnant water and poor drainage, which also causes them to multiply. They lay eggs on the surface of the water to reproduce. They can be found in air coolers, pots and plants and even in bathrooms and toilets of your homes. Their itchy bites are annoying, but they can also be a health threat. These types of insects sometimes carry serious health hazards for your family.

4. Flies

The house fly is the most common fly found in and around homes. They rarely breed inside structures; however, they readily take advantage of open doors or unscreened windows to get indoors for food or shelter. They carry various types of diseases including food poisoning bacteria and are often responsible for food-borne illnesses which can be a huge annoyance.

5. Wasps

Wasps are not known to carry human diseases, but allergic reactions to their sting can be fatal. However, female paper wasps are notorious for ending up inside homes. They enter through small crevices near the roofline when searching for potential overwintering spots. Once inside, paper wasps often hide in wall voids or inside warm attics. Locating their nest can be tricky, especially if it’s inside the walls of your home. They could be a serious sign of an infestation inside.

6. Bees

Bees can enter any structure or object that contains a hole that is a quarter of an inch or larger. If your home has previously had problems with honey bees, make sure the honeycomb is removed. Reducing outdoor clutter can also prevent bees from nesting in your home. Unused appliances can attract honey bees since they provide sufficient shelter for a hive to thrive. Pay attention to any flying insects coming or going from small holes to your home since they cause various bacterial and fungal infections to the members of your family especially kids.

7. Spiders

One of the most common types of spiders that you will likely find in your home is aptly named the ‘house spider’. Spiders are useful in eating and controlling other common pests, but nobody wants to see them in their homes. They show up in places where they are not wanted, such as in bedrooms, bathrooms and family rooms, and their webs can be a nuisance. If you want to get rid of the spiders infesting your home, one of the first steps to take is to pest-proof your home so that they can’t find a source of food.

8. Termites

Termites share common ancestors with cockroaches and can be found in tight fitting doors and hard-to-open windows. Termites can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day, which illustrates just how time-sensitive a termite infestation is. They cause severe allergies, skin diseases, fungal infections, and even toxicity. People who suffer from allergies can get worse on their condition. In other cases, mild asthma can rapidly transform into a chronic condition with more severe symptoms.

9. Bedbugs

As their name suggests, bed bugs are often found in and around the bed area. During the summer travel season, these unwanted house guests are easily transported from one place to another. They are a homeowner’s worst nightmare that can be found in cracks and crevices. Bed Bugs are nocturnal creatures that feed on human blood. Bedbugs have been suspected of transmitting several infectious diseases.. They breed in high-density areas, and infestations usually occur from lack of hygiene.

10. Rodents

The first of these is mice and rats that carry a wide variety of diseases, such as typhoid, meningitis and infectious jaundice. Rodents are both highly beneficial mammals and significant pests. Homeowners definitely don’t like cohabitating with them. Rodents like to make their nests in dark and secluded places, such as in walls and basements and under or between floors, where they won’t be bothered.

These are some of the common types of insects that crawl in your home and it’s presence in numbers can cause havoc on health and household property. They not only make the surrounding dirty but bring serious health issues to the family.
